COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Family members and friends gathered April 7th outside CEFCU Arena to honor the legacy of the Redbird 7—a group of Illinois State University figures who died in a 2015 plane crash near Central Illinois Regional Airport. Relatives shared memories of the victims and marked the decade since the tragedy with Project 7, a movement encouraging acts of kindness.  25 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seven Heartland Community College students earned national awards at the PAS conference held March 17—20 in Sheridan, Wyoming. The group won two national titles, three runner-up spots, and three third-place honors while faculty advisor Miranda Buss praised their hard work as they balanced classes and part-time jobs.  Cities 92.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Normal Town Council voted to modify an intergovernmental agreement—allowing Connect Transit to expand service to rural McLean County areas if the board chooses and without extra costs for Bloomington and Normal. The council also approved building two new homes on Marble Road in the Blackstone Trails subdivision.  Central Illinois Proud
  • On Monday, the Normal Town Council approved an ordinance that would let Connect Transit expand its service area from Bloomington-Normal into all of McLean County—filling a gap left by the termination of Show Bus last year. The council also approved saving funds for a first-time home buyer program, vacating easements for lot re‑subdivision in Blackstone Trails, and renewing a contract with Securitas for Uptown security.  WGLT
  • Bloomington will temporarily switch its water source from Evergreen Lake to Lake Bloomington as Evergreen Lake is treated for algae on Wednesday and Thursday. The change comes after weeks of resident complaints about the water's taste and smell caused by higher algae levels and a naturally occurring toxin called microcystin, and the switch will last about a week until the treatment is complete.  WGLT
  • The U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals set briefing deadlines for the challenge to the Illinois gun ban covering over 170 semi-automatic firearms and magazines, requiring the state to file its brief by May 7 — plaintiffs must file by June 6 and the state's reply is due by June 27.  Cities 92.9
  • The City of Bloomington advised residents to review their utility bills due April 5 in the InvoiceCloud Payor Portal for duplicate transactions after an error on Cycle 1 bills caused incorrect payments. Finance Director Scott Rathbun said autopsy users will have any incorrect payments reversed—online payers should check their accounts to confirm the correct balance since no late fees will be processed during this review.  Central Illinois Proud
