COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The remains of World War II U.S. Army Pfc. Robert Bryant were buried with military funeral honors Saturday at Park Hill Cemetery in Bloomington—his family said the service finally fulfilled a promise made long ago. Bryant was killed in action while searching for wounded rangers in Italy in September 1943 and his remains were identified using DNA from his cousins.  WGLT

  • Heartland Community College student Ella Brownlee was named to the 2025 All In Student Voting Honor Roll by the All In Campus Democracy Challenge organization + her recognition supports efforts to boost student civic engagement.  The Pantagraph

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In the 1950s, Mayor Cecil Cone and the Housing Authority secured a federal loan to plan public housing after Governor Stevenson urged city leaders to act, even though the City Council and residents like Walter L. Benson claimed there were no slums and feared racial integration—public housing projects such as Sunnyside Court were eventually built and improved local infrastructure.
