  • Today Memorial Day events are taking place around the Heart of Illinois. In Bloomington, a parade runs between 300 E. Front Street and Miller Park at 9 a.m.—a ceremony at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery and a fish fry with Outdoor Veterans at Keg Grove Brewing Company follow at noon.  25 News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Johnette Kamokunani Palumbo founded Kamokunani Hula Hālau in 2008 to share her Polynesian heritage and foster ohana through dance classes in Bloomington. She resumed classes in 2023 after a six-year sabbatical and now teaches both modern and traditional dances from Hawai’i, Tahiti, Cook Islands + New Zealand to a diverse group of students.  Central Illinois Proud

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bloomington city officials said that the restructured administration expects the new economic development plan to cut plan reviews for new projects—from a 10-day process to two weeks.  The Pantagraph
  • Illinois lawmakers passed two bills this week to support mothers—one bill gives paid time off for pumping breastmilk and the other lets certified nurse midwives help with home births in areas with limited care. Both bills passed in the legislature and now wait for the governor’s approval.  The Pantagraph

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bloomington’s South Hill ballpark on South Center Street launched baseball star Clark Griffith when the Bloomington Reds played their opening game on June 14 in 1887—he later helped shape the Washington Senators. The park had reserved seating, a press area and vendors, and it was sold at public auction in late 1892 for residential development.  The Pantagraph
