CRIME NEWS

  • A Bloomington woman crashed her SUV into a home on the 400 block of Douglas Street after an altercation with a man and allegedly backed up to hit the house again—officers arrested her on charges of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle and domestic battery and took her to McLean County Jail.  WJBC
  • Bloomington police stopped an Urbana man's car for darkly tinted windows and searched it when officers smelled raw cannabis, finding money, 41 grams of cannabis and a semi-automatic handgun—Saveiontae A. Johnson, 18, was held on charges of armed violence, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and drug offenses—he faces up to 30 years if convicted and will next appear in court on June 20.  Central Illinois Proud

CULTURE NEWS

  • Raymond McKoski, a law school professor and retired circuit judge, wrote a new biography of David Davis, a judge and close political ally of Lincoln whose mansion in Bloomington attracts thousands of visitors. The book, David Davis: Abraham Lincoln’s Favorite Judge, will be released July 22 by the University of Illinois Press — offering fresh insights into Davis's career and impact in law and politics.  WGLT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eight individuals were awarded the President’s Medallion at Heartland Community College’s Elevate Heartland 2025 on May 30—recognizing their impact on the college and the local community. The honorees include John Astroth, Alan Bedell, Deanna Frautschi, Ruifang Cao, Dolan Dalpoas, Colleen Kannaday, Mike Matejka, and Drake Zimmerman.  The Pantagraph
  • Bloomington Public School District 87 will offer free meals to kids this summer by sponsoring the Summer Food Service Program at 11 local sites—five of which serve breakfast and all offer lunch. Meals are free for anyone 18 and younger while those 19 and older can purchase meals for $3.50, and no meals will be served on June 19 or July 4.  Central Illinois Proud
  • The Bloomington Public Library’s Summer Reading Program began on May 27 and will run through July 28, inviting kids, teens, and adults to pick up a reading log at the library or Bookmobile—participants who complete their logs will win prizes distributed from June 9 until the end—last year the program broke participation records.  WJBC

  • Challenges to Illinois gun bans may soon be before the U.S. Supreme Court — the justices declined a Maryland case on AR-15s, noting that the issue could be reviewed in a future appeal; a Cook County case now awaits further court action.   Cities 92.9
  • Normal will close College Avenue from Anderson Park to Main Street on July 20 for the 'Stride & Ride' event that encourages walking, jogging and biking, and the Parks & Rec Department will host activities at Anderson Park.  The Pantagraph
