COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bloomington Parks and Rec launched an online survey yesterday to gather input on the future of the 134-year-old Miller Park Zoo — assistant director Dave Lamb said the feedback will help shape a master plan for updating the historic zoo — no deadline has been set.  WGLT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Owners of Pub I Lounge & Package Liquor at 505 W. Market St. in Bloomington announced they will close the business after 52 years on Friday, Aug. 15. They said the legacy of Pub I will continue at Pub II at 102 N. Linden St. in Normal.  The Pantagraph

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen decried Medicaid cuts during his tour of the NICU at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria on August 1, saying the new rules force patients to lose vital healthcare. He warned that lower reimbursements and tighter eligibility would strain local hospitals — concerns that followed the 2022 closure of a rural facility.  WGLT
  • Gov. JB Pritzker signed a law that will have Illinois public schools offer free annual mental health screenings for students in third grade through high school starting in the 2027-28 school year, provided the state approves funding + parents may opt their children out. The State Board of Education will supply screening materials to schools beginning September 2026.  WJBC
  • An appeals court ruled July 30 that the Illinois Education Labor Relations Board must review a dispute between Illinois State University and a union representing 300 campus workers over whether five snack bar supervisors perform mainly supervisory tasks — the board will reconsider the case with closer attention to duty details.  WGLT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The McLean County Health Department reported that West Nile Virus is on the rise after four mosquito pools tested positive, with one confirmed on July 31st in Bloomington—intensifying concerns about mosquito bites. Health officials advised residents to fight the bite by using repellent, removing standing water, and reporting stagnant water to reduce breeding.  Central Illinois Proud
