GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • District 87 is enforcing a new policy today that requires clear bags no bigger than 12 inches tall, 12 inches long, and 6 inches wide for anyone attending ticketed sports events to keep students, athletes, and spectators safe—exceptions include diaper, camera, and medical equipment bags while items like outside food, pets, and noisemakers are banned and bags can be bought for $10 at the district's main or athletics office.  Central Illinois Proud
  • The Illinois Department of Transportation awarded McLean County a $3.2 million grant to expand the Route 66 trail and connect McLean to Funk’s Grove — the 4.5-mile extension will be completed in December and offer a new travel route between towns. Future plans call for further expansion to link Towanda and Lexington.  Central Illinois Proud
  • Mayor Koos said on August 5 that if the McLean County Board does not approve an amendment to pause sales tax sharing for at least one year, it will stall discussions among the town, city, and county about modifying their intergovernmental agreement. The pause would allow an audit of a $20 million fund and a review of spending on jail expansion, justice technology, and mental health services — all moves that require unanimous consent from the three parties.  WGLT
  • Illinois State Police announced this week that it awarded the Bloomington Police Department a $21,520 grant to support enforcement of firearm laws — a grant that adds extra resources for local law enforcement — and the department will use the funds for this purpose.  The Pantagraph
  • The McLean County League of Women Voters will study how having two election authorities confuses voters and candidates in the county—most ballots are handled by the county clerk's office while Bloomington voters use a separate commission. They will interview experts and stakeholders and report their findings at their January 2026 membership meeting.  WGLT
