  • Bloomington will honor retired laborers from Local 392 who helped revitalize Sarah’s Garden at the David Davis Mansion later this week—official recognition will celebrate their role in restoring a historic local site.  The Pantagraph

CRIME NEWS

  • McLean County officials are investigating after a 57-year-old man was found dead Monday afternoon on a trail next to a bicycle at Comlara Park — the coroner confirmed the discovery and announced the probe is underway.  The Pantagraph

CULTURE NEWS

  • Illinois Humanities speaker Connie Martin presented a talk yesterday at Luther Oaks in Bloomington about pre-Civil War quilts that carried secret codes to help slaves escape via the Underground Railroad—she explained how quilt patterns signaled safe routes using her family history as an example.  The Pantagraph

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor JB Pritzker is expected to sign the FAIR Act soon to create a statewide public defenders office that sets caseload limits and increases funding for counties lacking full legal support. The law provides a two-year period for the new office to be established and aims to improve legal assistance for all defendants — ensuring better oversight and training for public defenders.  WGLT
  • The City of Bloomington will host a free Inclusion and Access Compliance Symposium on Aug. 26 at Heartland Community College’s Astroth Building — an event that gathers community leaders, experts and business professionals to discuss strategies for advancing workplace diversity, equity and inclusion — with breakout sessions running from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1500 W.
