- ➤ Authorities are investigating after firefighters found a man dead during a house fire on the 1300 block of West Elm Street in Bloomington at 7:57 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19 — the home sustained extensive damage and his identity is being withheld pending an autopsy. Central Illinois Proud
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Illinois State University is fixing cooling outages in several campus buildings, with most areas expected to have power restored before noon today. Flooding in Williams Hall keeps parts closed through the week—only one restroom is open while nearby buildings offer alternatives. Central Illinois Proud
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Central Illinois officials and activists said the Supreme Court may review its 2015 decision legalizing same-sex marriage—an action that could affect the rights of local couples—and urged residents to be vigilant. State Rep. Sharon Chung said Illinois law will continue to recognize marriages performed in other states—ensuring legal protections remain in place as changes are considered. The Pantagraph
- ➤ The city of Bloomington is closing the Market Street Parking Garage because repairs would cost $300,000—$400,000 and the building has become too deteriorated, so over 200 free parking spots have already been set up downtown. The city will work with Connect Transit to plan a new transfer station in the garage's place and will share more details soon. WJBC
- ➤ The Normal Town Council approved changes to the enterprise zone boundaries—adding 342.28 acres and removing nearly 100 acres—and voted on a solar panel project at Heartland Community College along with an ordinance for private alcohol sales at select events. They also updated progress on the 2023 strategic plan while awarding contracts for bank stabilization, park signage replacement, and increased fire protection services from Illinois State University.
