COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rader Family Farms and Country Financial held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday morning to launch a corn maze celebrating Country Financial’s 100th anniversary. Families will enjoy two maze phases—one designed for younger visitors and one more challenging—and the farm will offer an apple orchard, retail market and food stands starting Saturday until Nov. 1.  WGLT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • State Farm has introduced a voluntary exit program to give employees more choice during staffing changes—this plan will realign the workforce without reducing jobs in Bloomington, according to a company statement.  The Pantagraph

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Illinois Wesleyan University welcomed one of its largest incoming classes in 15 years when 595 new students joined the 1,084 already enrolled for the 2025-26 school year — 30% of them are first-generation and 13% come from McLean County.  Central Illinois Proud

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The McLean County Sheriff's Department said it allowed federal immigration agencies to use its Flock Safety license plate readers from April to August 12, which goes against Illinois law. The department has already tightened access to stop out-of-state searches and revised its camera policy—efforts it will monitor closely.  WGLT
  • At Monday's meeting, the City Council voted on three housing measures that update zoning rules to remove barriers for accessory dwelling units, small shops, and upper-floor home additions in the downtown transitional district—while also easing rules for duplex and townhome ownership and directing staff to review a design report. Voters Sheilia Montney and Kent Lee cast nay votes on all items.  WJBC
  • Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie outlined proposals for the next legislative session to ease rising utility bills and property taxes. McCombie said the state will extend deadlines for coal and natural gas plant shutdowns, remove the nuclear moratorium, and ask large energy users to help reduce unfunded mandates on schools—steps aimed at lowering costs for Central Illinois residents.  Central Illinois Proud

  • Normal West grad McCade Brown, 25, made his MLB debut with the Rockies on Aug. 24 in Pittsburgh, pitching three scoreless innings before giving up runs. After recovering from Tommy John surgery and training at K’s Academy, he now plans to improve his pitching command in upcoming games—he is focused on steady progress.  WGLT
