- ➤ Bloomington Parks and Recreation will host a free Breakfast and Bingo event at Miller Park on September 24. The event will offer residents a morning of food+games and a chance to meet neighbors. The Pantagraph
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Fall begins Sept. 22—Illinois state parks, historic sites and museums will host events including guided nature walks, a sunrise observance at Cahokia Mounds and a taco night at Dana-Thomas House. Visitors from Bloomington can plan day trips to enjoy seasonal festivals and historical reenactments across the state. Central Illinois Proud
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ McLean County Unit 5 School District celebrated its IT staff on Sept. 16 by treating them to lunch and donuts as a thank you for installing 800 new display panels that support teaching in 24 buildings. The 18-member team is credited with keeping school technology seamless and secure. WJBC
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bloomington-Normal Water Reclamation District received a $30,000 grant from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to study installing a sanitary sewer system in Colonial Meadows off Oakland Avenue. The study will replace 84 septic tanks and address stormwater runoff while design work will begin soon as the district pursues more grants. 25 News Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie warned that taxpayers could face up to $800 million in costs if Governor Pritzker does not fix the SNAP error rate, which has risen to 11.56% from 5.73% when he took office—breaching the 6% federal threshold and prompting comparisons to past mismanagement of COVID-era unemployment funds. - ➤ Bloomington’s Public Works Department will start a free bulk pickup for Solid Waste Program customers from October 6 to October 17 — dates that may change because of item volume and weather. After the event, crews will resume regular collection of leaves, brush and trimmings with a $25 charge per loader bucket on alternate weeks from recycling. Cities 92.9
- ➤ Former Bloomington city manager Tim Gleason resigned as Decatur’s city manager, with his resignation taking effect by October 31 + he returned in May to lead Decatur during a critical period while having served from 2015 to 2018 and held roles in Washington and Pekin. This move comes after his long record in public administration. 25 News Now
- ➤ State Rep. Sharon Chung said she will oppose the statewide tax plan on non-grocery deliveries to fund Chicago transit—arguing it unfairly shifts the burden to Central Illinois and that only Chicago and suburban areas should be taxed. She added that she co-sponsored a bill to let data centers use treated wastewater for cooling and noted rising housing and childcare costs among constituents ahead of the Oct. 14 veto session. WJBC
