CULTURE NEWS

  • Yolanda Alonso is showcasing her photo exhibit ‘Lele, La Muñeca Mexicana’ at Art Vortex Studio (101 W. Monroe Street, Suite 210) in downtown Bloomington where she displays photos of handmade Mexican dolls that honor indigenous traditions during National Hispanic Heritage Month. The exhibit will run on select dates in October and November with live music and art for sale.  The Pantagraph

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eight local schools—including two in Bloomington at Cornerstone Christian Academy of McLean County and Northpoint Elementary—will receive water bottle-filling stations and supplies like toothbrushes and reusable water bottles through the H2O On the Go grant from Delta Dental of Illinois. Nearly 60 schools statewide will benefit as the program aims to address sugary drink concerns and promote safe water.  Central Illinois Proud
  • On Oct. 2, Heartland criminal justice students will host a panel on the Jamie Snow murder case—inviting both students and the public to learn key details about the event.  The Pantagraph

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Connect Transit will launch the new “mint” route on Oct. 5, replacing the limited-hour “red express” route that ended on Oct. 3. The bus operates in a 30-minute loop from Walmart in Normal—serving key shopping, medical and residential stops along Greenbriar and Landmark Drive until 9:05 p.m. on weekdays and 6:05 p.m. on Sundays.  WJBC
  • At Monday's meeting, Bloomington City Council voted to implement a one percent grocery tax to help avoid deeper cuts and address a structural deficit—some council members opposed the measure as burdensome and the ordinance must be approved by Oct. 1. The council also increased video gaming licenses from 60 to 75—members objected to this expansion.  WJBC
  • Congressman Eric Sorensen toured the Liberty Steel and Wire facility in Bartonville on Monday as the company considered moving its headquarters to Peoria County. The Dallas-based firm plans to invest $70 million and create about 700 full-time jobs while it applies for a $25 million state grant.  Central Illinois Proud

  • OSF HealthCare and the McLean County Health Department will offer a free drive-up car seat safety check — part of Child Passenger Safety Week on Saturday, Sept. 27. Local parents can get their car seats inspected to ensure proper installation.  The Pantagraph
