COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 43rd Annual Children's Christmas Party will be held on Dec. 13 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. as a drive-through event at the Midwest Food Bank on Warehouse Road in Normal, offering holiday assistance to families facing unemployment or underemployment with age-appropriate gifts for children 12 and under, candy, and a $50 gift card+families must pre-register online or by mail to Children’s Christmas, P.O. Box 3396 in Bloomington, with local labor, business and civic partners organizing the event.  Central Illinois Proud
  • A free family bike ride is planned for Sunday at Tipton Park South in Bloomington—local families are encouraged to join and enjoy the event for all ages.  The Pantagraph

CULTURE NEWS

  • Athena Pajer of Bloomington offers custom typewriter poetry for cash outside a downtown bookstore—she uses old machines to create lasting art that unites people and has sparked similar efforts in other cities.  WGLT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday night, presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin spoke to about 800 people at Illinois Wesleyan University and recalled that Bloomington-Normal favorite son Adlai Stevenson II had been her commencement speaker when she graduated, noting his impactful speech on the Civil Rights Act. She added that his words and her insights on government’s role in change continue to influence her view of leadership—connecting past lessons to today’s challenges.  WGLT
  • Heartland Community College will hold a Health Sciences Open House on Wednesday, October 15 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Community Commons Building on the Main Campus—offering students and community members a chance to explore labs, meet faculty, and learn about the selective admission process.  Cities 92.9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Town of Normal council approved an $8M contract with Axon—installing a 10-year digital records system upgrade for its police—and set a public hearing Dec. 1 to form a new Uptown North TIF district aimed at spurring local redevelopment. The council’s action follows similar steps taken by the Bloomington City Council as part of ongoing efforts to modernize public systems.  WGLT
  • City, town and county officials remain at odds over sales tax money used to replace an outdated electronic record management system that connects courts, police, and other agencies—frustration has grown due to long delays and vendor issues. Officials plan to evaluate new options like Axon as they work on resolving funding and contract questions.  WGLT
