COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Toys for Tots marks its 25th anniversary in McLean County today with a goal to donate 25,000 new toys to local children—donations can be dropped off at the WJBC studios at 236 Greenwood Ave in Bloomington or at other designated locations. WJBC
- ➤ Monsignor Doug Hennessy, known as Father Doug, died on November 13 at age 87 and served Central Illinois as a priest for nearly fifty years while championing civil rights. A Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity in Bloomington with visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday. WGLT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A dystopian play called So You Think You Can Stay by Miami-based playwright Ariel Cipolla will debut this weekend at the Normal Theater—209 W. North St.—in a game show format that challenges immigration views and invites audience participation. Two performances are set for November 15th at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. while two more will take place on November 16th. WGLT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Heartland Community College alumni association honored four graduates on Nov 12—Jeremiah Fletcher received the Distinguished Alumnus Award, Adam McGuckin the Career Achievement Award, Josh McWilliams the College Engagement Award and Brian Peterson the Community Service Award. Vice president Chris Downing said the ceremony showed the college has always focused on student success after graduation. Central Illinois Proud
- ➤ White Horse Academy moved its operations to Second Presbyterian Church — school leaders invite the community to tour the new space as the school grows. The Pantagraph
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bloomington native Jeanette Barrett, who served as McLean County clerk for 21 years until 1998, died at 99. A memorial Mass is set (11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18 at St. Patrick Church in Merna) with a one hour visitation before the service. WGLT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Counselors and addiction experts met Thursday in Normal at a problem gambling conference where ICPG head Dave Wohl urged local governments to use video gambling revenue for treatment—he warned that gambling can lead to depression, substance abuse, and even suicide. Keith Whyte said the rise of in-game sports wagers has increased addiction risks among young people, with Bloomington and Normal collecting nearly $1 million and $425,000 respectively from gaming machines this year.
