  • A Bloomington single mother of three will soon get a new home built by Habitat for Humanity of McLean County and local volunteers—construction began last October and is set to finish this fall. She struggled with high rent and unsafe conditions, and the new home will offer a safer place for her children.  25 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Five Mississippi men were sentenced to probation and ordered to pay fines and restitution for illegally hunting white-tailed deer in southern Illinois, while a Chicago-area man pleaded guilty to fraud for arranging over $5 million in utility services for 2,000 properties. More than 150 National Guard soldiers from the 2-106th Cavalry returned home today—joining their friends and family in Bloomington.  Cities 92.9
  • Bloomington police arrested 36-year-old Joshua Glass after responding just after 2 a.m. on Wednesday to a caller who reported seeing him fire a handgun multiple times near Sheridan Street and Hinshaw Ave (he faces charges for reckless discharge of a firearm, felon in possession of a weapon, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon).  25 News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A powerful thunderstorm hit Bloomington on July 16 — strong winds over 60 mph toppled trees and power lines, leaving thousands without electricity. City crews and first responders cleared debris and handled over 100 emergency calls as residents dealt with blocked roads and hazards.  The Pantagraph
  • Bloomington will host a household hazardous waste collection event at the Interstate Center on Oct. 4 that is open to all Illinois residents at no cost. Appointments must be made by noon Friday, Sept. 26 by calling 309-GOTO-HHW—this requirement will help manage traffic and reduce wait times.  WGLT

  • Bloomington Mayor Dan Brady will reassess the sales tax sharing agreement and wants clearer benefits for the city as talks continue about funding mental health services, jail expansion, and related upgrades. He also said the city removed the collapsed Reconcile Church from East Mulberry Street for public safety and approved a $13.2 million downtown streetscape project that will save $4.8 million—focusing on essential underground infrastructure improvements.  WGLT
